Principal's Report
I would like to extend my sincere gratitude for your support throughout this term as I acted as Principal. Karla Black, will be joining us as our permanent Principal, beginning in Term 4. Karla is eager to become part of the Ipswich West community, and I trust you will join me in warmly welcoming her to our school.

Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher Interviews are essential for fostering open communication between teachers and caregivers, ensuring that both parties are aligned in supporting the academic and personal growth of our students. On Wednesday our teachers met with parents/carers to discuss our student's strengths, areas for improvement, and strategies for success, building on our home/school partnership.
Swimming Lessons
Our students attended Swimming Lessons this week as part of our Water Safety and Swimming Education Program. Teaching children about water safety in Queensland is vital, as it equips them with the knowledge and skills to navigate our state's numerous beaches, pools, and waterways safely, helping to prevent incidents and ensure their well-being.
Teacher Aide Week
Last week we celebrated our amazing Teacher Aides. We are so fortunate to have them, with their continual commitment to our students, school and community. Thank you for guiding and helping our students strive to be the best they can be.
Colour Run
The Colour Run was a great success, with students demonstrating outstanding behaviour and enthusiasm throughout the afternoon. Thanks to their participation and community support, we raised funds that will directly benefit our school. I would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank our P&C and volunteers on the day. Events like the Colour Run would not be so successful, without their tremendous support.
I hope you all have a relaxing holiday, and I look forward to seeing everyone in Term 4.

Book Week Success
Thank you to everyone who participated in our Book Week celebrations! It was truly wonderful to see the school filled with students dressed as their favourite characters, bringing the world of books to life. Special thanks to our volunteers who acted as Mystery Readers throughout the week and also to Mrs Keidel and Nanna Mary for their tireless efforts to create beautiful decorations and displays. Remember, reading IS magic—it opens doors to new adventures, sparks imagination, and brings us closer together. We can’t wait for next year’s Book Week!
Teaching Literacy Skills at Ipswich West State School
I have attached an article about how parents can help their child with developing the “Big Six” of Literacy skills. The science around how reading is best learned has seen some significant developments over the last few years, which has resulted in some changes to the way it is taught in classrooms. This may leave parents wondering how to support their children at home, in a way that aligns with current practises. Check out the Literacy Hub website https://www.literacyhub.edu.au/for-families/ for more information.

End of Term Fun and Memories: A Reflection on an Exciting Term!
As we approach the end of another incredible school term, it’s a great time to reflect on all the amazing experiences and moments. From exciting adventures to unforgettable laughter, this term has truly been one for the books!
Year 5/6 Camp: Adventures and Teamwork
One of the biggest highlights for our Year 5/6 students was their much-anticipated camp! Over the course of a few days, students were pushed beyond their comfort zones, learned the importance of teamwork, and made lasting friendships.
Of course, who could forget the Giant Drop Swing? For many, it was a heart-racing mix of fear and thrill as they soared through the air. There were squeals, laughter, and even a few nervous giggles, but everyone faced the challenge with bravery and came out with stories to tell. Whether you were cheering from the ground or taking the plunge yourself (me included!), the memories of that giant swing will stay with us forever!
Slimed at the Colour Run: A Splash of Fun
An explosion of colour, excitement, and... slime! Yes, you read that right! The Colour Run not only filled the air with vibrant powders, but some of our brave teachers, Mrs Sullivan and I were slimed, making it an event to remember.
We want to extend a massive "thank you" to everyone who participated and helped organize the event. Your energy and enthusiasm brought the day to life. The laughter was contagious, and seeing the smiles on everyone's faces reminded us why we do what we do. Even though some of us are still washing off the slime, it was all worth it for the fun we had together.
Meeting Preps for 2025
I was thrilled to have the opportunity to meet some of our wonderful new prep students joining us next year. It’s always exciting to welcome fresh faces, full of curiosity and potential, into our school community. We look forward to supporting them on their educational journey!
A Final Thank You
As we head into the holidays, we wish all our students and families a restful and enjoyable break. We can’t wait to see you back next term, ready for more exciting adventures, learning opportunities, and of course, more fun!
Have a wonderful holiday, everyone!

Japanese
Taiko
Recently Miss Archer and I have been exchanging some information about taiko (Japanese drums), as I know she is teaching her music students about these, and they will be featuring in her concert performance this year.
In 2019, when I went on a study tour to Kanazawa. I was lucky enough to be taken to a drumming workshop where I was shown various types of taiko and given the chance to learn a short routine with the drums.
Photo 1: You should be able to see that the insides of the drums above have very different carving patterns which allows for variations of sound.
Photo 2: The photo shows the taiko sensei in full force showing us the power of the instrument.
The demonstration was lots of fun, but actually using the taiko and having to remember the drumming sequence and small dance was even more fun! I love taiko!
If you do too, maybe check out this film by Wes Anderson which features a soundtrack almost completely comprising of taiko sounds. Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dt__kig8PVU
For a chance to win a random prize, tell Miss Collins how many taiko appear at the beginning of the trailer. And what was the pilot’s dog’s name?

Energex Electrical Safety Week
Last week, we welcomed the Energex Electrical Safety Heroes Program into our school.
It is an educational program to help teach primary school students about electricity and how to behave safely around electrical equipment. We do this by delivering important safety messages, using interactive teaching resources that are aligned to support the curriculum requirements of Queensland schools. The resources align with the Prep to Year 6 Australian Curriculum for Health and Physical Education and Key Outcomes for Science, English, Mathematics and Drama.
If you would like to continue these important conversations with your child, please follow this link for everything you will need. This includes access to the new Safety Heroes app!

Health Talks for Year 5/6 Students
On Thursday 31 October, we will be hosting the annual health talks for our Year 5 and 6 students. These will be presented by Ms Tonkes who is a registered nurse, based at Bremer State High School. The talks will be divided into two groups of male and female students (to lessen any embarrassment), and the class teacher and I will be with the students during the talk. The presentation covers important topics such as: body changes, personal hygiene, emotional changes, puberty, mindfulness and menstruation.
*Year 6 female students will be given a sample pack of Kotex sanitary products to take home.
Sexual health and gender identity will not be covered during the presentation.
Permission notes were sent home with students on Thursday 5 September. Please sign and return these to the class teacher by Wednesday 30 October, if you consent for your child to participate.
